Microsoft Says Apple's Revised App Store Guidelines Offer a 'Bad Experience for Customers'

Microsoft has called the revised Apple Store's revised guidelines for broadcasting services a "bad thing." Apple has been forced to update its App Store guidelines around game streaming services like Microsoft's xCloud or Google Stadia for iOS or iPadOS. The Cupertino giant has approved such apps in its App Store, but with major warnings Microsoft reportedly does not agree with them. In a statement released online, Microsoft said it did not want game players to download more than 100 apps to play each game.

Apple has made changes to its App Store guide to ease some of the limitations surrounding game streaming services such as Microsoft's xCloud (integrated with Xbox Game Pass Ultimate) and Google's Stadia. This came after Google and Microsoft, both of which decided to discontinue their streaming services to iOS and iPad OS devices due to Apple's rules. While Apple has now allowed game streaming services to be available on its platform, it has asked companies to submit individual games for review, and that their game streaming services will need to be lists linked to each game application.

Microsoft has responded to Apple's Apple Store's changes in a statement to The Verge, "This is always a bad thing for consumers. Game players want to get directly into the game from their selected catalog within a single app as they do with movies or songs, and can be forced to download more than 100 apps to play each game from the cloud. We are committed to putting game players in the middle of everything we do, and providing a good experience is at the heart of that work. By mentioning "movies or songs", Microsoft appears to be pointing to Netflix, Spotify, and other streaming platforms that do not need to submit each movie or song for review.
